Sustainable Skills Series: Heat Retention Cooking (Making a WonderBox)
Heat retention cooking is as old as civilization, but most modern people have forgotten this efficient method of preparing food that conserves both energy and water.
This class will cover a brief history; various types of heat–retention cookers in both emergency and long-term applications; as well as the fundamentals of cooking and food safety while using this technique.
All heat-retention cookers work from the fundamental principle of putting a hot pot of food into a highly insulated box. A wonderbag is a fabric, drawstring-type cooker that cinches around the hot pot. A wonderbox is more like a fabric box with a lid that the pot sits inside.
In this fall class, students will make their own wonderbag-style heat retention cookers to take home.
There will be a break for lunch — and students will get to have a meal that has been prepared by using a wonderbox! *Please let us know on the questions below if you have any food allergies.
